What is USSD?

USSD โ€“ unstructured supplementary service data, is a service that allows mobile phone users to interact with a remote application from their device in real-time. It is a highly scalable service as it does not require an internet connection and is supported by both features and smartphones.

How does the USSD service work?

A predefined session is started once a user dials into a code e.g. *123# facilitating the transfer of information between the USSD application and the mobile user.

Types of USSD codes

There are 2 types of USSD codes:

  1. Dedicated USSD codes: a unique code that will exclusively belong to your organization

  2. Shared USSD code: accessing the service via an assigned channel on our default USSD code

The session billing options available are:

  • Postpaid: The cost of a session is covered by the code owner.

  • Prepaid: The cost is covered by both the owner and the end-user.
